Audible books are an extremely enjoyable way to hear stories. You can listen in the car, or when out walking, or even when you are too tired to read.
I first became aware of the power of listening to books when my mother was dying of cancer. She was too ill to read and so we began bringing her in books on cassette or DVD – this was some time ago and I had no awareness of Audible back then.
Listening to books really lifted her spirits. She was instantly transported into the world of the story and away from the grim reality of her illness.
If you have any audiobooks you have finished with – try donating to your local hospice or nursing home – they are usually gratefully received as they can be expensive.
The expense is the reason I joined Amazon’s audible books – they can cost £20- £30. It works out much cheaper than buying them.
Since I joined Audible I get a book every month although there are special offers from time to time and you can get more.
I have enjoyed listening to many books both non-fiction and fiction.
AUDIBLE BOOKS IN FICTION
One of my favourite fiction books was Small Great Things by Jodi Piccoult – the narrators were amazing and the story was… I can’t say hard to put down, and hard to stop listening hasn’t quite got the same ring but I would say it was riveting. I did a review on Small Great Things here.
AUDIBLE BOOKS IN NON-FICTION
All categories and genre are available on Audible though my favourite listening category is autobiography and memoir. If the narrator is good you can feel as though he/she is talking to you.
The Glass Castle, the memoir from Jeanette Walls is another one of my favourites – the story is one of endurance.
I have no idea how Jeanette survived such a chaotic childhood but somehow she not only did just that but she did it grace and strength. The Glass Castle is an inspiring story with no self- pity. You can read my review here.
These are just two of my favourites and whatever your preferred genre you can find plenty more to listen to.
